School shadowing is when a trained therapist supports a child directly in the classroom to translate their learning to learn and classroom readiness skills into the school setting. The therapist helps the child follow instructions, stay engaged in lessons, manage transitions, interact with peers, and apply skills learned during therapy in real time.
Importantly, the therapist also observes how the child learns best and provides support in ways that match their unique learning style. The goal is to bridge gaps in participation and ensure the child can learn alongside classmates as independently as possible.
Shadowing can begin as early as preschool age if a child requires additional support to participate meaningfully in group routines.
For some children, support continues into primary or secondary school when challenges with attention, regulation, or peer interactions remain. The timing depends not just on age, but the child’s need for support in a school setting.
We view shadowing as a short-term bridge, with the child’s integration and adjustment into the school setting as the long-term goal. We want children to take part confidently and sustainably in the classroom without the need for ongoing one-to-one assistance.
At Tesserae, our ideal shadowing period is between 2-4 weeks. In addition to shadowing your child, we aim to help the school team implement strategies and make environmental adjustments that allow your child to succeed independently. This may include using visual schedules, adjusting classroom seating to minimize distractions, modifying routines to support transitions, or equipping teachers with simple tools to increase participation.
At Tesserae, we prioritise collaboration because successful school shadowing depends on everyone working together.
Open communication through check-ins and progress reviews ensures that everyone is aligned. The shared goal is a smooth integration where the child thrives, the teacher feels supported, and the shadow’s role can be gradually faded.
Training standards can vary widely.
In some cases, shadows are classroom aides with little formal background. At Tesserae, we believe that school shadowing should only be carried out by trained therapists working under the supervision of a BCBA or BCBA-D. This ensures that every strategy used is evidence-based, consistent, and clinically guided.
At Tesserae, we approach school shadowing differently:
With Tesserae, parents can feel confident that shadowing is purposeful, efficient, and designed to fade, so their child not only integrates but thrives in school life with lasting independence.
